Bringing “Indigo” to Life: Exploring the Champaran Satyagraha
Bringing the story of courage, justice, and self-reliance to life through experiential learning History becomes meaningful when students go beyond reading about the past and begin to understand the people, struggles, and ideas that shaped it. As part of their learning of “Indigo” by Louis Fischer , our students explored the story of the Champaran Satyagraha and Gandhi’s remarkable approach to addressing injustice. Discovering the Story of Champaran The journey began with Rajkumar Shukla , a poor and determined sharecropper from Champaran, who approached Gandhi at the 1916 Congress session in Lucknow and urged him to visit the region. His persistence eventually brought Gandhi to Champaran to understand the hardships faced by the peasants. Students explored how the peasants were forced to grow indigo on 15% of their land under the prevailing arrangement with British landlords.
